Oregon takes the lead on gun violence prevention

Where the federal government fails to lead, Oregon once again steps up.

This time? On gun violence and protecting victims of domestic violence.

Congress fails to act. People keep dying. The latest: innocent high school children, teachers, coaches!

The day after the horrendous tragedy in Parkland, Florida, the Oregon House voted to close a dangerous loophole in our state’s gun laws.

Currently, despite some progress, there are too many situations under Oregon law in which abusers and stalkers are still allowed to own firearms. So, we must fix the "boyfriend loophole" that potentially endangers all Oregonians, especially victims of domestic violence.

Last Thursday, Oregon did something. House Bill 4145 is a strong step in the right direction.

What’s next? The bill goes on to the Oregon Senate, where I urge them to pass it without delay.

We can only hope this action inspires more action, because, when it comes to America’s gun laws, our system is broken. Enough is enough!
