So much is at stake

The news last night: Donald Trump picked former Republican political operative Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee to the Supreme Court.

We know that Kavanaugh, who has served as a federal appeals court judge in Washington D.C. for the past decade, was selected from a list created and shaped by conservative activist groups that have as their priority undoing longstanding precedent like Roe v. Wade and popular legislation like the Affordable Care Act.

Kavanaugh must be thoroughly vetted. His views as expressed in his speeches and writings — and his emails — must be publicly exposed and debated.

Just for starters — he's written over 300 judicial opinions — including some that have been overturned on appeal. But if he gets confirmed to the Supreme Court, his decisions will be the Law of the Land — no longer subject to review, or reversal.

The future of health care, reproductive freedoms, LGBTQIA+ rights, workers' rights, affirmative action, and so much more is at stake.

As Oregon's Attorney General, I will continue to fight to protect these freedoms that our families and communities value most.

I'm calling on the U.S. Senate to do the same as they consider Kavanaugh's nomination.
