Together let's fight hate in Oregon

Being told to "go back to your country."

Suffering physical harm.

Fearing for safety each moment of every day, whether in a church, a synagogue, a mosque, or just walking down the street or taking public transportation.

These are the realities for far too many people across America at a time when those who hold bias and prejudice – instead of love – in their hearts have been emboldened to act upon their hate-filled beliefs.

That's why, to start 2019, I took my Task Force on Hate Crime Prevention on the road. We heard real stories from everyday Oregonians who are vulnerable in today's America. We listened. Now we need to act!

As the legislative session gets underway, we're preparing to address a very real problem by proposing bills to strengthen our state's hate crime laws, provide more support to victims of hate-motivated conduct, and keep better track of incidents of hatred and discrimination in our communities.

By engaging directly with victims and with populations that suffer discrimination, we can write better laws that more adequately address the needs of people suffering right now.

There's a long road ahead. I envision a robust discussion and debate. But I know that we can make headway this year against hate crimes and discrimination. Stay tuned. I look forward to sharing further updates with you in the coming weeks and months.
