A BIG win over hate

Last year, after the horrible MAX train killings, I put together a Task Force on Hate Crimes Prevention to address the very real problems we experience throughout our state with hate-motivated conduct. These include ineffective hate crime laws, lack of support for victims, and an inadequate program to keep track of incidents of hatred and bias in our communities. Our law doesn't even include gender identity as a protected class!

In March I introduced a bill that would address these problems.

I'm thrilled to announce that this legislation has now passed both the Senate and the House and is on its way to the Governor's desk for her signature!

This bill is the culmination of an amazing community and legislative effort. It truly "took a village," and I could not be more proud of all who helped make it happen.

We're making strides.

The road ahead is long. But we can continue to make headway this year in the fight against hate and discrimination.
