Combating Hate

  • In 2018, Ellen created a task force on hate crimes to review laws between legislative sessions and strengthen the state’s ability to support victims and bring perpetrators of hate-based crimes to justice.

  • The hate crimes task force created SB 577. The law requires better police reporting, allocates more funding to victim services, changes charge verbiage from “intimidation” to bias crime and adds gender identity as a protected class. It was signed into law last September.

  • Ellen’s office created a new hate crimes hotline and a statewide PSA to get the word out about how to look out for and report incidents of hate.

  • With the rise of hate crimes and bias incidents against AAPI communities following racist remarks from President Trump during COVID-19, Ellen wrote a call to action for all Oregonians to fight back against these racist incidents and stand up for our AAPI neighbors.
