Criminal Justice and Police Reform

  • In 2017, Ellen led the way on House Bill 2335, a legislation to curb police profiling by providing higher levels of transparency. The law also heightens accountability by requiring data to be analyzed and made available by the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission.

  • Ellen supports and advocates loosening sentencing rules for juveniles. Most recently, in May 2019, Ellen advocated Senate Bill 1008, which gave more discretion to judges in suggesting exceptions to the rule when trying minors.

  • In May 2020 Ellen urged the US Congress to grant state AGs more resources and authority to lead “pattern or practice” investigations into unconstitutional or abusive practices in local police departments.
